Maria Clara Pinto

Cane Weaving (Caning)
She learned the craft in two days, at the homes of the artisans who caned her husband's chairs. Since then, Ms. Maria Clara Pinto has never stopped her work.

She began this craft around 1987 to support her husband, a chair maker, at a time when he could no longer rely on the women who caned his chairs. Since then, she has been caning chairs, bed headboards, armchairs, and other pieces entrusted to her. She has worked for various chair makers in Lordelo, as well as for interior design stores and antique dealers, performing restorations, and continues to accept and fulfill incoming requests.

Her art consists of meticulously weaving cane onto surfaces. The cane, previously soaked to gain elasticity, becomes perfectly stretched and firm after drying.
